Surrogate Brains

This first DIY local punk record I ever bought was a split split 7 inch by The Surrogate Brains and I Am The Hamster. I was visiting my family and going to summer school down in Stockton. I had a lot of catching up to do in school. I cut a lot of school in the first three years of high school, so I was trying to take care of buisiness. This was when I was in my full blown thrash metal phase, uniform and all. (tight ass levis, band shirts, hi tops and long hair) At that point, I knew some Punk stuff, But it was mainly the bigger well known bands that you could find at tower records that I knew.

Franklin High was quite the experience for me. I was used to going to a small continuation type of school up in Camino and this was in east side Stockton. There were probably about 5 Metal heads in the whole school. We would get high at lunch, walk around and smoke cigarettes, and talk about Metal and shit. I fell asleep in class everyday after lunch....... One day I saw 5 white kids start some shit with a couple of cambodian kids, the next thing I knew, the 5 white kids were surrounded by what looked like over 50 cambodian kids. They circled around them and then all hell broke loose. It was over in about 3 minutes........ Every now and then I'd recognise someone that I used to go to school with from when I was a little kid, only now they were part of some group that I religiously avoided......... Another time I walked passed these girls with big poofy hairy and they laughed at me and my hair. All of us were walking to the bus stop. I was about 15 feet ahead of them. So, as they were making fun of me, I cut a big, hot, stinky, silent fart in their path. They walked right into it. They got all pissed off, but they didn't know that i did it. What a victory, I had the giggles the whole bus ride home.

So, back to the Brains. One day I was standing in line at a lunch wagon and these two nerdy looking guys with back packs on got in line in back of me. One of them asked me if I wanted to buy a Surrogate Brains record. I pulled out my lunch money and bought one on the spot. I brought it home and played it on my aunt's record player. My cousin made fun of it, my other cousin's boyfriend told me that punk was stupid and gay( he liked Y&T). I was immediately hooked, I was more partial to the Surrogate Brains side. After the summer,I brought it back home and exposed the mountain metal heads to my new find. You never forget your first.
