I Like Beans and Tulsa

Man, I've been feeding myself for the last 5 days with a dollar bag of beans and a bag of fruit that somebody gave to me. Not bad at all. You can save lots of dough by eating like that. The only drawback is the obnoxious amounts of gas that accompany it all. I tend to use that sort of thing to my advantage though. Mainly on the guys at work. I like getting them back for all the times they got one over on me. My favorite thing to do is to ask them to come over and help me with something and have them walk into my secret attack. Ahh sweet revenge ( or shall I say, sour). When people ask me what I do at work, I just tell them that all we do is run around and fart on each other. Even the owner of the company gets in on it. It keeps everyone laughing. It sure beats the hell out of all of that "Smooth Jazz" that we have to listen to. I don't think I could cope if all I did at work was work, how boring that would be. It seems like I am constantly finding different methods of "shitting on the clock". I'm pretty beaned out and cleaned out for this week. So on to something else.

I've been pretty nuts about this band as of late. They are called Tulsa. I think they are originally from Tulsa, but now they're from The Mission in San Francisco. And like some of the bands from the area (Hickey, 50 Million, Shotwell, to name a few) they have that sloppy, lo-fi, catchy as all hell sound that I like so much. It's kinda like dirty pop songs tuned to alcohol and B.O. For real yo. They recently put out an album on Starcleaners. The vinyl comes with silk screened covers, a zine with the words as well as a cd of the album. This is my cup and there ain't no tea to be found.

Here's two from the new one.

Tulsa - Number One Gorilla

Tulsa - Shallow Water

This is from their split 7 inch with The Answer Lies on Repulsion Records

Tulsa - Fiddler's Green

Afro-Punk

I just finished watching Afro-Punk. Local Guy Jeff Jaworski From Red Tape makes a couple of appearances in it. So right on for him. I thought it was just as good as American Hardcore. I'd even watch it again. Check it out if you haven't already done so.

Here's something for all of the Matty Luv/ Hickey/ Fuckboyz people out there.

Recently, George Graquitena, a former drummer of the Fuckboyz (other than Aesop) put up a video on youtube of Matty Luv sitting on a bed in a hotel room during the fuckboyz' move from Florida to California, singing a song with just him and his guitar. Fuckin' Cool.................................... The more songs form him the better. He was a rare breed...................... I recorded the audio from the video and made a mp3 out of it, so all you folks out in digital land can enjoy this long lost song just as I have. Dump some beer and remember.

Mannequins and Beer

A friend of mine named Swingin' Vic showed us this movie called "Still Life" the other night. We were kicking it in the back yard discussing what was more frightening. Zombies or Sociopaths. We were siding with the zombies, seeing as they have evolved from being big, slow and clumsy brain eaters to the more modern running faster than shit kind of brain eaters. Then we went inside and watched the movie. She won the round on that one (with this movie at least). It was sociopaths, especially when you throw mannequins into the mix. Not bad at all. The director of this movie is Jon Knautz. Give this a quick look and let me know what you think, It's only 8 and a half minutes long. Thanks for the tip Vic.

Missile Command

I finally got the chance to see Ludicra on the first night of their tour. It was right down the street from my house and it was on my birthday. It couldn't have been timed better. They're one of my favorites these days, and in my opinion, one of the better Metal bands out there today.

Missile Command was the band that Christy Cather(Vocals and guitar) was in before Ludicra. They were from Davis, CA and put out a self released cassette called "Prepare To Be Attacked". They were one of the first Metal bands that I saw after moving to this town. They played at a place that is not known to be a big supporter of the local Metal scene. So that made it even better. Every once in a while a band comes along and renews my faith in Metal (that's cuz I'm pretty picky about the genre as a whole). That night Missile Command did it for me. I'm a sucker for angular guitars, head banging and someone who understands all that is good about Metal, plus they had two people on vocals and some keyboard in there too. I'm not suprised at all that she went on to form a band as great as Ludicra. Here's a couple from the tape.

Missile Command - Fire

Missile Command - Electric Funeral

Get the whole tape here

I talked to their drummer once and I guess he was the one who was crazy about old school Atari and everything. I asked him if he ever heard of the porno games that they made for Atari, but he had never heard of them. Sometimes I think people might think I'm making it up, but it's real. Check it out here.

Waking Up

I forgot to set my alarm the other night, but that doesn't seem to matter much. More often than not, I instantly wake up right around the time that I'm supposed to. Right about 4 am. After doing the same thing every day, It's just become a routine that I've been conditioned to. It's usually timed perfect to whatever I'm dreaming about. The other night, I was having this dream about a guy who was going around and killing all of these women. It was largely influenced by the tv shows that Zelly and Melissa were watching when I went to bed(Criminal Minds & CSI). Well this guy was running amok, killing all of these women with a gun. They all had daughters too, and he killed them as well. After his last killing, he got careless and put down his gun on a table right by the woman and her daughter and went looking through their stuff. The woman wasn't actually dead, she was just playing it. When he wasn't looking, she reached for the gun and shot him in the neck, right in the Adam's apple. He got up, ran for the door, jumped in his car and drove off. Then some random person walking down the street looks over and says " If he can't make it to the hospital in time, well then he's just a wimp". After that being said, I woke up and realised that my alarm wasn't set. It was right around 4 am.

5 Dollar Burrito

I believe I'm coming out of the hermit hole. I am a hibernator of sorts. I'd love it if I had a sleep hut made out of nothing but blankets and pillows ( and plenty of tunes). It would probably have to have some good ventilation in it too. I don't want it smelling like week old body parts in there. ............. I woke myself up at 8 o' clock last saturday and hopped on the Lite Rail and went down to the flea market on Folsom. The first thing I did when I got there was go to the taco truck. I walked up and ordered a burrito and then noticed that the thing cost 5 bucks. Holy cow! It's been a while since I've been to one of those. I used to live off those trucks. But that was when they were 2 bucks. Nothing good sticks around exactly how you remember them. .......... Time goes on and I start sounding like an old timer. I bought one anyway, just because I had my heart set on it. That's how much they charge at the fancy taquerias around town anyway. It was pretty good. It had that homemade taste and they crammed it full. I still think there should be 2 dollar burritos (right across the street from my house would be nice). After my grub, I looked around and flicked through a ton of VHS tapes. I found some old horror movie, but I didn't snag it. I was gonna come back around and get it later. I spaced that one. I went to the building with all of the cassettes next. I found a few old metal tapes there in the past. I dug through the them for a while and then what happens to me everytime I go looking for stuff happened to me. I had to take a dump. I went to about five different stalls and outhouses before settling on the sixth one. They were all smeared with crap, didn't have any butt paper or they were flooded and wouldn't flush. When I got out, I felt like a 5 dollar burrito for 2 bucks. I walked back down the corridor where the tapes were and saw a small stack of records and found "Craps" by Richard Pryor. I looked inside and it looked pretty clean. Some guy came by and eyeballed my find for a good 20 seconds, and then he split. On the way out, I stopped in the book bunker. It was cold as winter balls in there. It smells kinda funny in there too, but you get used to it fast. It's not the safest place in the world to be, seeing as it's closed off to the side and full of books and magazines everywhere and no one really keeps an eye on it. It kinda makes your imagination run wild and vision a bunch of killers lurking behind every corner. That's part of the fun. I looked around for a while in there and then walked to the back, looked on the ground and found a copy of the science fiction mag "Future Life" from 1980 with Carl Sagan on the cover. I got both for a dollar. All in all, it was a good day for this little hermit.

Here's the last bit from the Richard Pryor album

The Lizards and Elmer

The Lizards are one of many of my favorite local bands. Before I lived in Sacramento, I used to drive up and see them whenever they played. So when I moved, they were an added bonus to be around. After I had been living in town, I went down to Stockton to see them at the CSM with The Oozzies............ I think....... The crowd down there pretty much ignored them. Nobody came up close to watch them exept for me and and my friend Redge and one big pissed off guy with a moustache. He kept yelling at them, shouting out stuff like "faggot" and "fuckin' queers". At one point, He grabbed the mic and yelled out something like " go back to Sacramento and suck your own dicks you fuckin' fags". What a freakin' party pooper, but he was pretty funny to watch. The Lizards played a rockin' set and then the singer Dave jumped into the drum set when they were done and knocked them all over the place, followed by some chaotic feedback for a few minutes. Now that's a show. They've had a few different members through their existence. This recording has Donny Jupiter from The Twinkeyz on guitars and Chris Woodhouse from The FM Knives on bass. Later members would include Jay Onyskin from The Sea Pigs and The Horny Mormons on bass and Matt K. Shrugg from The Losin Streaks on drums. The main stays in the band were Dave Downey on guitar/vocs and Hal MacLean on the drums. This is my favorite song by them. It's from the Lizards/ Elmer split 7 inch. It came out on Turgid Records in 1994.

The Lizards - Can't Cope

Elmer had Hal's brother Jim in it, who were both in Sewer Trout. Elmer were similar in sound to Sewer Trout, but more on the country side of punk.( I almost said cowpunk, but that makes me think of all of those LA bands from the 80's) They were pretty great as well. I only had the chance to see them once, but I'm glad I did. Their version of Kenny Roger's " The Gambler" made my night. I figured that since I put up a song from the Lizards side, it wouldn't be complete without a song from the Elmer side.

Elmer - Creature Of Habit

On a side note, Dave Downey has a comic book store that's worth checking out if that's your thing.

DMZ

I found this one for a buck while doing some thrift storing with the pied piper. I came to find out that this was Jeff "Mono Mann" Connolly's band before he formed The Lyres. I never really got into The Lyres too much. I did once find about three or four of their tapes in the alley by where I lived. Their stuff was all hit and miss with me. A few good songs and a few forgettable ones. I suppose I should go back and listen to those tapes and see how they fare today. As for DMZ, It's kinda the same. They didn't blow me away at first listen, but it's growing on me, at least a few of the songs are. This was more 60's punk/ bar band sounding than 70's punk. Just Rock and Roll I guess( and pretty rockin' at that), whatever, not bad for a buck. For all of your trivial needs, this record was produced by Flo and Eddie from The Turtles.

Darkness Over Depth

A while back, Metal Music posted an album by a one man project called Darkness Over Depth. It's one of the best things that I've heard in a while. If you like the band Goblin or any other kind of atmospheric, horror, soundtrack kind of music, I say definately check this out. It looks like they're based out of China. The label is called Keysmet Productions. That's the only place that I know of where you can buy it. If anyone knows of anywhere else, please let me know. They also have another album out that I'd like to hear someday. I'm posting the first two tracks for you folks to hear. The link over here is still valid if anyone is interested.

Fear of God

Here's a couple tunes from Fear of God's "Within the Veil". Dawn Crosby was the singer of this band. She was also in the thrash metal band "Detente". Unfortunately, she died back in 1996. The End Records just re-released Detente's "Recognize No Authority". Detente were good and all, but her vocals really shined on the Fear of God stuff. It was far more gloomy and dark and more "Metal" in my eyes. I remember my friend had a song of their's on some compilation and I remember it sounding pretty heavy and liking it. That's about all I heard of them, riding around in his car listening to that one song. Fast forward up to 2006 and I finally hear them again, thanks to Melissa's friend T-bone. She sent her home with a CD for me to check out and it was pretty damn good. It definately stood the test of time. This is a fine example of "good" Metal, as opposed to unoriginal, copy cat, sound of the moment "bad" Metal.

Pipe Bombs in my Vitamins?

I remember finding a Woody Guthrie album at a flea market about 12 years ago for a buck. At the time, Metal was getting much too macho for my tastes and a lot of the Punk coming out was sounding a bit too polished and processed. I needed something real and more down to earth than all of this "being in a band business". The second that I put the needle down, I was taken to another place. He was just talking about trying to live an honest life and why should a person have to screw another person just to make it in this world. It was all simple, but very effective. It was just what I needed to peel off all of the layers of bullshit that make my life complicated. It was kinda like when you stay up all night and get drunk with your best friend and talk about a bunch of shit that you forgot ever happened and how much you think things are screwed up and how you can't get enough of the things that you love in life. So, regardless of what style a music is, all I truly ever am looking for is stuff that doesn't "give a fuck"and is something that I can "talk to". Plain and simple.

I imagine the same thing could of happened to the folks in "This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb". Maybe they got bored with the same old crap and went diggin'. I guess you could call them a "punk" band, but their sound is definately rooted in the political folk/ protest song approach. I saw them a few times and had a ball everytime. They're the kind of band I wished I lived in the same town as.

The Star Song ( from "Dance Party With")

one of the stars in your eyes has gone out,
so we lay back on the rooftop late at night
in hopes that a shooting star might take root
in the hole in your head.
and we'll wake up in the morning
being stared down by an ashamed sun,
shamefully covering behind a cloud or two,
old man you've followed me down,
you've beaten me down,
and tonight i got the best of you.

Selma ( from "Front Seat Solidarity")

Selma, Alabama, 1965, tried to walk across the bridge
never mad it home alive
first they got beaten down by the sheriff’s hand,
then they got shot down by the klan
they never made it home alive.
sitting home in Detroit, watching her TV show,
heard the news about Selma, she says she's got to go.
packed her bags, drove all day and all night.
gonna go down to Selma gonna fight the good fight.
but she never made it home alive.
this is for the ones who never made it home alive.
call em martyrs if you want to, we don't mind

Hot Diggety ( from "Front Seat Solidarity")

These old arms of mine,
poppin and crackin all the time
they can't pick up what they should pick up
makes me depressed sometimes
these dang knees that I've got on
somebody must've put em on wrong
I can't really depend on em
I can't walk halfa mile on em
I've got one ear that I can't hear from
got a wrist that needs a little work done
when I talk my jaw gets locked up
I wake up and some mornings it's frozen
and now I'm old and crookedy
and I ain't even turned 30 yet
well my daddy died when he was 47, I'm right behind
he had his problems and I got mine
my danged ol back, she's out of whack
I got headaches that could knock out a horse
and I've got some mental problems of course
people used to say I was so thin
the bones are gonna pop right out of my skin
one night I was running from the cops
and I hopped a fence and my ankle went pop
I'm feeling old and crookedy

Cirith Ungol

Me and Melissa took my daughter Zelly to Disneyland for her 12th birthday. The last time I went was about 21 years ago with my Aunt and my Grandma and my two cousins. I remember having to get a hair cut before going at my aunt's request. I was reluctant , but I gave in. I got one of those hair do's that looks like an old style football helmut. It went nice with my corduroy
short shorts and a Scorpions shirt. For some reason, the one thing that sticks in my head is having to take a shower with my younger cousin and then peeing on him while we were in there. Right when I pissed, he let out this high pitched scream and then we started laughing. We talked a lot about Lake Titicaca too on the way there. I miss that guy. We used to always crack ourselves up. .................................On this trip, there was a day where I kept seeing a guy walking around with a Cirith Ungol shirt on. Everytime I saw him I would get that "metal" feeling( the one where you hold out our hand of fire and make a scary face and let out a demonic hiss). You see, Cirith Ungol were a metal band from southern California in the early 80's. They had a fantasy/doom/heavy metal with screeching vocals kind of sound. They were one of the first underground metal bands that I had ever heard. I used to tune in to this high school station called KYDS (they are still broadcasting today). They played all the classic stuff like Mercyful Fate, Exodus, Trouble, Venom, Slayer, Motorhead etc. I taped a show from there that had the song "Finger of Scorn" on it. That song has always stuck with me. It was one of those epic sounding songs........fantasy metal geek bliss....... Well, we ended up riding that ride where you sit in a giant innertube and go down some rapids. Who did I sit next to? Why the Cirith Ungol shirt wearin' guy of course. I sat down right next to him. Him and his girl were wearing these disposable raincoat things. I didn't bring up his shirt or anything. I clammed up and then I got soaked. That kind of thing happens from time to time. So this post goes out to that Cirith Ungol wearin' shirt guy for keeping it alive. Cool shirt, man

Cirith Ungol - Finger of Scorn

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, me and Zelly had a couple of celebrity sitings. We saw George Lucas' cousin. He was everywhere we were, even at the hotel. We were polite and gave him his space. As we were walking out of that California Adventure Land place, The younger brother of Weird Al walked right by us. Yep

Happy Birthday Kiddo!

Are You Frying?

It's been a long time since I've done any acid. I used to take it here and there from the time I was 14 to about the age of 21. For the most part, they were all fun experiences. But there were a couple times that got kinda hairy.

I remember taking a couple of hits in an A-frame house up in the mountains with some friends and a couple of guys who weren't tripping. All night long the two guys kept saying stuff like "you guys are lying" and "You're all faking it", all the while, everything was coming on stronger and stronger. Everytime we started doing something fun, like watching cartoons or running around all crazy outside, one of the guys would fuck it all up. For instance, I was out on the deck looking up into the trees and stars and everything was starting to swirl all together and turn into something else, then out of nowhere, I hear a nasally voice say "what are you doing?". All of a sudden, I felt like I had to play it straight. Who the hell wants to play it straight when their on acid. As the night went on, the house seemed like it was getting smaller and smaller. My friend Justin would randomly come up to me through out the night and ask me "are you frying?" and after each time, I'd laugh the same way I had laughed before, it was identical and each time it would fuck with me that it was identical. I was starting to feel like a robot. We all eventually ended upstairs in the bedroom of one of the non believers (it was his house). He had the classic stoner room with a black light, strobe light, black light posters and bandanas hanging all over the walls. We started smoking some weed, that's all we ever did when we went over there. We sent Justin downstairs to get a tape to listen to. About 20 minutes went by and still no Justin. I went down to see what happened to him. When I got downstairs, I saw him standing there, staring at the cassettes on the table. I walked up to him and he says again "are you frying?" I laughed again and it was if I had gotten stuck down there with him too. Now there were two of us staring at the cassettes on the table. Someone else had to come down to get us a short while later. I had to go in the bathroom and get myself together. I washed my face a few times and looked at myself in the mirror. My face looked like it was transparent and made of wax. I washed my face again and got the hell out of there. I went back upstairs, but everyone had gone outside or something. So I just sat on the bed and looked at all of the posters. I heard someone coming, it was one of the non believer guys. He came in, handed me a guitar and said "play stairway to heaven". I was the guitar player of the bunch, so everytime there was a guitar around, someone would ask me to play that damn song. I looked down at the guitar and it looked really huge and my hands looked really small. I tried hitting the first few notes, but no notes came out, my fingers weren't working. He was still there waiting for his song. I looked up and everything started spinning up in a whirlwind through the ceiling and out of the house. I stared up at it and it felt like it was going to take me with it. I looked up at the non believer and started to say help, but I caught myself. My friends came back and we got out of there. We had to walk about 3 miles back home. There were no street lights up there, so everything was pitch-black. It felt like we were escaping from that A-frame. About 5 minutes into the walk, this devil voice popped into my head, it sounded like Calibos from Clash of the Titans. It kept laughing and telling me that we weren't going to make it. I started to think that it wasn't in my head at all, but was coming from just beyond the redwoods at the end of the path. We made it home a while later and I was starting to feel like my old self. It wasn't really a bad trip, but it was putting me to the test. If I never hear "Staiway to Heaven" for the rest of my life, I think I would be fine with that.

Surrogate Brains

This first DIY local punk record I ever bought was a split split 7 inch by The Surrogate Brains and I Am The Hamster. I was visiting my family and going to summer school down in Stockton. I had a lot of catching up to do in school. I cut a lot of school in the first three years of high school, so I was trying to take care of buisiness. This was when I was in my full blown thrash metal phase, uniform and all. (tight ass levis, band shirts, hi tops and long hair) At that point, I knew some Punk stuff, But it was mainly the bigger well known bands that you could find at tower records that I knew.

Franklin High was quite the experience for me. I was used to going to a small continuation type of school up in Camino and this was in east side Stockton. There were probably about 5 Metal heads in the whole school. We would get high at lunch, walk around and smoke cigarettes, and talk about Metal and shit. I fell asleep in class everyday after lunch....... One day I saw 5 white kids start some shit with a couple of cambodian kids, the next thing I knew, the 5 white kids were surrounded by what looked like over 50 cambodian kids. They circled around them and then all hell broke loose. It was over in about 3 minutes........ Every now and then I'd recognise someone that I used to go to school with from when I was a little kid, only now they were part of some group that I religiously avoided......... Another time I walked passed these girls with big poofy hairy and they laughed at me and my hair. All of us were walking to the bus stop. I was about 15 feet ahead of them. So, as they were making fun of me, I cut a big, hot, stinky, silent fart in their path. They walked right into it. They got all pissed off, but they didn't know that i did it. What a victory, I had the giggles the whole bus ride home.

So, back to the Brains. One day I was standing in line at a lunch wagon and these two nerdy looking guys with back packs on got in line in back of me. One of them asked me if I wanted to buy a Surrogate Brains record. I pulled out my lunch money and bought one on the spot. I brought it home and played it on my aunt's record player. My cousin made fun of it, my other cousin's boyfriend told me that punk was stupid and gay( he liked Y&T). I was immediately hooked, I was more partial to the Surrogate Brains side. After the summer,I brought it back home and exposed the mountain metal heads to my new find. You never forget your first.

Rodney Rodriguez 1971 - 2006

My friend Rodney passed away last week. He was the same age as me.......... It's weird knowing that I'll never run in to him or talk to him again. I haven't seen him in about ten years, so I'm sure he went through a lot changes in his life, just as I have.

Whenever I think about him, I remember going over to his house, getting high and hangin out in his backyard and in his bedroom, watching him draw and make darts for his blow gun, listening to his stories and listening to lots of Metal.

One of his favorite bands was Fate's Warning. He knew it inside and out. Every word and every musical part. After my Grandma called me up and told me he had died, I popped in a tape that he made for me. Oh man, It gave me cold chills through my whole body. It brought me back to walking through Legion Park with him and Trevor on our way to his sister and brother in-law's apartment. Rodney was singing "Guardian" and Trevor was chiming in here and there and I was just watching them. We were on our way to smoke some weed, drink some beers, listen to some tunes and kick it. Not a care in the world. He was always good for that....................... My heart goes out to everyone in his life. It's never easy losing someone.

These walls are stained engraved with pain
You will find them under shadows casting shame
Some it's all they'll ever know,
Angels of the fortunate sons come and go ... You may not
Entities pass in the night Guardians and the Reaper fight the will to live shall win
Mares of hope ride through their dreams
blinding light awakens sleeping dawn it seems
It was all a dream endless dream
I will wish upon a star I believe in you
And if my will has strayed afar I rememebered you
Will you remember me I the one you sentenced Pennance unabsolved
Answer me save my will have you forgotten me
Pace the hallway blindman for a million miles of stars
His mind has seen, think you may he lives in darkness
We're the dark he's seen the light of dream
Karen's been asleep forever I know she hears me
She has so much to say, Machine shootssparks through face
Unto my hand, unto my heart
I'm a fire without a flame helpless child without a name
With broken wings catch me I'm falling
I'm a question with no answer who are you that takes my life away from me
unveil the bondaries of the black
I had a dream I was you strong as the fire
In your veins then when I called out your name
I would remain and witness the pain
I am beyond silent black I will be back as your guardian
Angels in white you have sacrificed witness and bury the pain
Walk hand and hand with the fear stricken child strengthen the weak and the lame
pillar of pennance and lore
Perpetual journey into the realm
the sovereign servitor

Rest well my friend
